Tooling solutions for machining turbochargers and turbo housings in ISO K and ISO M materials

A turbocharger—or turbo—is a turbine-driven, forced induction device that increases an internal combustion engine’s efficiency and power output by forcing extra air into the combustion chamber.
The complex nature of the systems requires manufacturing precision to enable maximized efficiency and downsizing of the engine.
The material on the hot side of the component must withstand temperatures of around 1300 °C, which is why austenitic stainless steel is a common material in gasoline engines. Machining of the abrasive material is often characterized by extremely short and irregular insert tool life, uneven wear and difficulties meeting the tight workpiece tolerances.
Besides our extensive standard offer, Sandvik Coromant also has dedicated products and engineered solutions that fully support overcoming the challenges presented by manufacturing these components.
