Troubleshooting for reaming

Main problems

  • Spindle or tool runout is too high
  • Wrong cutting data
  • Built-up edge

When solving a problem:

  • Look at the whole system (tool, clamping, spindle, coolant, etc.)
  • Always change only one parameter at a time

Oversized bore

  • Size of the tool diameter is too high
  • Cutting speed/feed is too high
  • Spindle or tool runout is not good
  • Cutting chamfer is too short or varying
  • Built-up edge
  • Oil percentage in coolant is too high
  • Pre-drilled hole not aligned to reamer

Undersized bore

  • Tool with high wear
  • Cutting speed/feed is too low
  • Thin-walled workpiece
  • Workpiece springs back after machining
  • Allowance for reaming is too small

Tapered bore

  • Spindle or tool runout is not good
  • Failure on the cutting chamfer
  • Pre-drilled hole not aligned to reamer
  • Inaccurate pilot bore

Bad surface finish bore

  • No or not enough coolant resulting in built-up edge
  • Poor chip removal
  • Material bends resulting in built-up edge
  • Poor surface in the pilot bore
  • Bad run-out of the cutting chamfer
  • Cutting speed/feed is too high
  • Damaged tool, for example, broken cutting edge

Wrong position of the bore

  • Position of the pilot bore is wrong
  • Bad run-out of the cutting chamfer

Bore is convex or oval

  • Workpiece is not stable in the clamping fixture

Chatter marks in the bore

  • Built-up edge
  • Oil percentage in the coolant is too low
  • Circular land is too wide
  • Allowance for reaming is too small
  • Tool is clamped wrong in the holder
(not strong enough, not straight, for example)
  • Bad spindle run-out
  • Feed is too low

Tool clamps and breakage

  • Back taper is too small
  • Circular land is too wide
  • Pilot bore is too small
  • Cutting chamfer with high or unequal wear
  • Feed is too high
  • Problems with chips

Feed grooves in bore

  • Tool with high wear
  • Broken cutting edge
  • Build up on the cutting edges

Chip removal problems

  • Cutting speed/feed is too high or too low
  • Incorrect coolant pressure
  • Ensure the right reamer is used
  • Spiral flute for through hole
  • Straight flute for blind hole
