​​Resource circularity and environmental responsibility

The perfect sustainability strategy does not exist, but our teams of experts aim to change that. Despite the conservative nature of the metalworking industry, Sandvik Coromant has managed to break stereotypes with products and solutions that continue to inspire positive change throughout the entire manufacturing value chain and, most importantly, among our customers, partners and collaborators. 

Now we are taking it a step further. Being sustainable means being proactive, and you cannot adapt to quick change in the modern world without the help of smart tools. As a sustainability advocate and supporter of the UN goals and the Paris Climate Agreement, Sandvik Coromant took the initiative to develop a set of internal goals, which later diverged into another internal movement called Make the Shift. But how do we measure progress? The only tangible way of evaluating our company’s performance is to keep track of all of our factories and facilities around the world. We needed a constant and reliable source of data that would serve as a reference point when developing and tweaking our sustainability strategy and minimizing our environmental footprint in the future. 

The problem was that such tool did not exist. Not until last year.

Promoting environmental efficiency through sustainable manufacturing

 In 2018, the 23rd UN Climate Change Conference, Conference of the Parties (COP) took place in Bonn, Germany. Soon after, the idea for a sustainability self-assessment tool was put into motion. The tool had to cover several categories and reflect sensory data with total accuracy, and as an assessment tool, it needed a grading system. This is how the Green factories and sustainable facilities tool came to be. 

​Sandvik Coromant launched it internally last year, covering sixteen factories and facilities from around the world. The tool is divided in six fixed dimensions: Health and Safety, Resources, Working environment, Emissions and Waste, Site, Building and Infrastructure, and last but not least, Production. The grading system is comprised of six levels based on the amount of local engagement, from “Local initiatives exist” to “Best practice” and “Future stage”. Tied to these categories are numerous KPIs or indicators that can vary and whose compound performance directly affects their dimension and the overall level, for a more structured way of working.

But it’s far more than just a straightforward collection of data. The tool provides highlights, risks and other decision-making suggestions, which provide further insight to plant managers and sustainability leaders every quarter. 

A fully circular approach to sustainability lies in repurposing and reducing all types of waste: recovering surplus heat, using LED lights, solar panels and other fossil-free energy solutions, recycling instead of sourcing raw materials, installing embedded sensors, even ending the habit of using paper cups in lounge areas – every small step towards sustainability makes a difference and Green factories and sustainable facilities aims to record them and show how they affect the bigger picture. It allows us to measure the sustainability status of our sites and tackle every challenge efficiently, following a stream of data-based analyses and relevant recommendations to improve factories and facilities in ways that will engage our employees and visitors as well as maintain a safe and up-to-date work environment. 

Smarter energy use for a cleaner manufacturing economy

We aspire to complete cohesiveness in our industry initiatives by sharing knowledge and best practices locally and globally through a variety of activities and energy-saving solutions. The two main objectives of Sandvik Coromant for 2030 are to increase energy efficiency by repurposing or reducing energy spent on operations (2.5% per year) and to increase the usage of clean energy. Full circularity and halving our CO2 impact are some of the main goals of Make the Shift, through which we address targets on organizational, functional and site levels.
