General recycling packaging instructions

Put the materials in our boxes or barrels

For our carriers to be able to pick up the order, the materials need to be packed in either our boxes or our barrels. The weight of one box shall NOT exceed 20 kg (48.5 lbs) and the weight of the barrels should NOT exceed 250 kg (551.2 lbs). If three boxes or fewer are being sent to us, then the boxes can be transported as individual parcels without being strapped on a pallet. If more than three boxes are sent to us, we recommend using a barrel instead of boxes. If no barrels are available, then we recommend strapping four or more boxes on a pallet. Boxes and barrels must be free of oil, coolant or other liquid residues for shipment. The carbide should be as dry as possible and as free from dirt and chips as possible. Inserts and round tools can be mixed in the same box or barrel.

Define net- and gross-weight

Net weight is only the weight of the material excluding packaging material (boxes, barrels, pallets etc). Gross weight is the total weight of the material including the packaging material.

If you only have equipment to measure the gross-weight of the loaded pallet, and not the boxes or barrels separately then you can deduct the weight of the boxes, barrels, and pallet from the total grossweight to get the net-weight.

Shipment of up to 3 boxes

Step 1: Prepare the packing of the material

Put the material inside the boxes, max 20 kg (48.5 lbs) per box, and ensure the boxes are properly closed and banded.

Step 2: Add a label to the box

Print out the received labels and put them on the top of each box. Do not put the label on a closer or on top of the sealing band. Make sure that the labels are clearly visible to enable the barcode to be scanned.

Shipment of pallets

Step 1: Choose the right pallet

What is meant by pallet

Pallets are light weighted frames usually made of plastic or wood and they are used to make the transportation of the goods easier. A pallet is often handled with a truck; therefore, the measurement and condition of the pallet are important so that the carrier can pick it up.

Size of the pallet

The size of the pallet depends on which country or region it is. Within Europe, it’s possible to also load barrels on half and quarter pallets as well as full pallets.

Using a new pallet or a pallet in mint condition is recommended versus using a damaged or repaired pallet. Even though reusing a pallet could be cost-efficient and good for the environment, a reused pallet has a higher risk of coming apart than a new one or one in mint condition.

A pallet can be made from different materials, for example wood, plastic, metal, fiberboard, or corrugated pallets. We recommend using wood pallets with four-way entry capabilities since they are sturdy and consistent.

Step 2: Load the pallet correctly

The height of the loaded pallet (including boxes or barrels on the pallet) should not exceed 200 cm (78.74 inches) for a whole pallet, 150 cm (59 inches) for a half pallet, and 120 cm (47 inches) for a quarter pallet. As mentioned earlier we recommend you send barrels instead of boxes if you wish to send more than three boxes, however, if you send us more than three boxes they should preferably be strapped on a pallet. The weight limit for one loaded whole pallet is 1000 kg (2205 lbs), for a half pallet 500 kg (1102 lbs) and for a quarter pallet 200 kg (440 lbs).

Stack the boxes on a pallet

The boxes should be column stacked on the pallet. This way the boxes are stacked safely with great stacking strength. The boxes should not be pyramid stacked since it exposes the goods to damage, risk of delay, and additional surcharges. The boxes should not overhang the pallet’s edges since the goods can be exposed to damage and can weaken the box’s individual strength by more than 30%.

Use banding, edge protection, and preferably shrink wrap for pallets loaded with boxes. There are different kinds of shrink wrap but please do not use black-colored shrink wrap.

Load the barrels on a pallet

Before loading the barrels, they should be tightly tied together with steel or polypropylene bands. Metal bands are preferred for metal barrels and for shipments over 100 kg (220 lbs).

Try to place the single barrel or the group of barrels as close as possible to the center of the pallet and ensure that there is no overhang. Pallets loaded with barrels need to be banded and preferably shrink-wrapped. There are different kinds of shrink wrap but please do not use black-colored shrink wrap.

Step 3: Add a label to the pallet

Print out the received labels and put labels on the shrink wrap on each side of the pallet and on top of the pallet. Make sure that the labels are clearly visible to enable the barcode to be scanned.
